LocalAI Cowork is a Windows application for delegating multi-step work while keeping the task, context, tools, model, approvals, and outputs visible.

What is an AI coworker?

An AI chatbot responds to a message. An AI coworker takes a desired outcome, works through several steps, uses permitted tools, asks when a decision is needed, and returns something you can review. The useful part is not pretending the model is a person; it is giving automated work a clear scope and a visible feedback loop.

One surface for the working loop

LocalAI Cowork combines chat with projects and work tasks. File context keeps relevant material attached to the task. Model profiles let you choose Ollama or a configured hosted endpoint. MCP servers and terminals provide actions. Skills, templates, pipelines, and CrewAI workflows make repeated processes reusable. Approval states and audit information make important execution visible.

Why a desktop app?

Knowledge work often begins in local folders, documents, repositories, and command-line tools. A desktop workspace can connect those resources without uploading an entire workspace to a hosted account. It also gives local models direct relevance. This advantage comes with responsibility: file changes and commands can have real effects, so permissions, review, and backups matter.

Know the limits

LocalAI Cowork is an early-stage open-source project, not an autonomous employee. Model output can be incomplete or wrong. Tools can change files. Remote providers receive the content sent to them. Keep a human responsible for consequential decisions, use version control or backups, and begin with narrow permissions.

How it compares

Unlike Claude Cowork, LocalAI Cowork does not provide Anthropic's commercial hosted experience and first-party model ecosystem. Unlike Microsoft Copilot Cowork, it is not natively grounded in Microsoft 365 organizational data. Its purpose is different: offer a modifiable, local-first Windows route with model and tool choice.
