LocalAI Cowork offers an inspectable Windows workspace with local model support. Microsoft 365 Copilot Cowork is designed to act across Outlook, Teams, calendars, files, and enterprise data. The right choice depends on where your work lives.
The important difference
Microsoft 365 Copilot Cowork is deeply integrated with the Microsoft 365 environment. Microsoft says it can send email, schedule meetings, create Office documents, post in Teams, manage files, and use organizational context, with approval checkpoints for sensitive actions. LocalAI Cowork does not reproduce that managed cloud and enterprise integration.
Instead, LocalAI Cowork provides a local-first, Apache-2.0 desktop application. It combines tasks, local files, configurable models, MCP servers, terminals, approvals, and audit information. You can run an Ollama model on your own device or connect a compatible hosted endpoint when needed.

- You want Ollama and a local model to be a first-class option.

- You prefer to select the provider and accept the operational responsibility yourself.
When Copilot Cowork is the better fit

Start locally, add only what you need
LocalAI Cowork can be evaluated without an app account: install it, connect Ollama, choose a non-sensitive working folder, and review each tool action. Remote models and services are optional configurations. Whenever you add one, its own terms and data handling apply.
